Master Painters Institute (MPI)
Dedicated to advancing the painting and coatings application industry through quality standards and quality assurance, Master Painters Institute (MPI) serves architectural and industrial paint and coating manufacturers, specifiers, and painters and contractors. MPI is a vital resource for the coatings industry worldwide and the leading paint performance certification organization in North America.

Paint Performance Standards
MPI has set over 300 standards for coating quality, performance, and sustainability. We test manufacturers’ products based on the requirements of its standards.

Coating Selection
MPI develops coating systems to aid in the selection of coating to building substrate. We write project-specific coatings specifications and publish Architectural Specification & Maintenance Repainting Manuals.

Product Testing
MPI tests products against its stated performance standards and acknowledge those that have met or exceeded them by placing these products on the widely used MPI Approved Product List (APL). These products are then given the MPI Approved, Green Performance, or Extreme Green logos.

Education and Training
MPI offers the most comprehensive online painting education program and certification in the architectural/commercial coatings industry. This program covers everything from the essentials, to architectural painting and maintenance repainting, and finally, quality assurance. Completion of the four courses is one of the prerequisites for becoming an MPI Certified Architectural Coatings Inspector.

Environmental Considerations and Options
Today's paints contain both organic and inorganic materials, some of which may adversely impact the environment. In this spirit, MPI maintains a list of products that adhere to more environmentally friendly factors such as lower VOC emissions and more organic ingredients.
